What is a shiny?
A shiny Pokémon has a rare alternate colour palette. It's purely cosmetic — the stats are identical — but it's the badge of a dedicated hunter.
The odds
Base odds are about 1 in 4,096 in modern games (1 in 8,192 before Gen VI). The Shiny Charm and chaining methods shorten the hunt considerably.
Where it started
Shinies debuted in Generation II — the red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage was the series' first guaranteed shiny.
